Natural gas production from shale up

March 8, 2018

Ohio's Utica Shale natural gas production grew 24 percent last year but oil production dropped.

Statistics released Thursday by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources show that in 2017, horizontal shale wells produced 1.7 trillion cubic feet of natural gas - almost twice what the state's homes and businesses consume annually.

While the gas was flowing, oil production from horizontal shale wells dropped 9 percent to 16.4 million barrels.

Belmont County led natural gas production with 779 billion cubic feet for the year, while Harrison County was the top oil-producing county with almost 6 million barrels.

Among drillers in 2017, Gulfport Energy produced the most natural gas with 380 billion cubic feet and Chesapeake Energy was the top oil producer with 5.7 million barrels.
